Flux (Black Forest Labs)

What is Flux?

Flux is a series of image generation models from Black Forest Labs — a startup founded by the original researchers behind Stable Diffusion. Launched in August 2024, Flux.1 immediately outperformed existing models on multiple quality benchmarks, including realism, prompt adherence and anatomical correctness. It has quickly grown to be one of the most widely used image generation models in the professional community.

The Flux models

Black Forest Labs offers three variants:

• Flux.1 [pro] — the most capable model, available via API
• Flux.1 [dev] — open-weight model for research and non-commercial use
• Flux.1 [schnell] — Apache 2.0 licensed, fast and suitable for commercial use

Flux's architecture combines a multimodal diffusion transformer with flow matching, resulting in better image quality and faster generation times compared to earlier models.
