What is Claude Code?
Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic development assistant that runs directly in your terminal. Rather than offering isolated autocomplete suggestions, it reads and reasons about an entire codebase, then plans, writes, edits, and tests code to complete real tasks from start to finish. It is built to act less like an autocomplete tool and more like a capable engineering collaborator who can take a goal and drive it to completion with minimal hand-holding.
How does Claude Code work?
You describe what you want in plain language, and Claude Code explores the project, locates the relevant files, and makes the necessary changes across as many files as the task requires. It can run shell commands, execute tests, read error output, and iterate until the work is done.
Because it operates in the terminal, it fits naturally into existing developer workflows and version control, and it can connect to external tools and data sources through the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to extend what it can see and do.
Core features
- Whole-codebase understanding — ingests and reasons about large projects in their entirety rather than working on one file at a time.
- Agentic execution — autonomously plans and carries out multi-step, multi-file tasks end to end, including running commands and tests.
- Terminal-native — lives in the command line, integrating cleanly with your shell, editor, and Git workflow.
- Test and verify loop — runs tests, inspects failures, and iterates on its own changes to reach a working result.
- Extensibility via MCP — connects to external services, documentation, and tooling through the Model Context Protocol.
- Powerful underlying models — backed by Anthropic's Claude models, tuned for strong reasoning and coding performance.
Common uses
Developers reach for Claude Code to implement new features, refactor and clean up legacy code, fix bugs, write and maintain tests, migrate code between framework or model versions, and explain unfamiliar parts of a codebase. It is equally useful for quick one-off edits and for larger tasks that span many files.
Who is it for?
Claude Code is aimed at software developers and engineering teams who want an AI that can work at the level of a thoughtful collaborator rather than a simple suggestion engine. It suits anyone comfortable in the terminal who wants to delegate substantial, well-defined coding work while staying in control of the results.
